It’s great to get out with the family on weekends as see the great sites around Australia. A quick trip out on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon is always topped off by finding a nice picnic spot, firing up a Barbie and having a few snags and a hot cuppa. The trouble is that the public barbecue facilities at some of the better picnic spots are often very busy, and sometimes nonexistent. If they are there public barbecues are sometimes dirty, don’t work properly, or you don’t know if animals have been standing on it before you get there.
By the time you wait around for your turn, or clean the BBQ that is there it can seriously cut into your time out enjoying yourself. There are of course a few solutions to this dilemma.
You can take a small butane stove, but if you are cooking for a family these rarely offer enough cooking surface and heat to really do the job properly.
A larger, gas powered BBQ that is portable is the ideal solution. One that can fold down, be stored in the boot, and be ready to cook on within minutes of pulling up.
A hillbilly cooking stand with a gas attachment is the easy to transport, easy to assemble solution to having a BBQ on your family day out. It is quickly put together, and ready to go in minutes of arriving. The snags will be sizzling before you know it!
There are a variety of attachments, from fry pans to grill / plate combinations. Camp ovens and woks can also be attached.
If you are around Melbourne there are some great spots to take the family for a half day out, especially up in the Dandenongs. Emerald lake is a fantastic spot for a weekend BBQ, as is Crystal Brooke park near Cardinia Reservoir, or Lysterfield Lake which is near Endeavour hills.

A good camp oven can be a big factor between a great meal when camping, or having to eat somehting that is burnt, undercooked or takes forever to be ready to eat. Here at buycampinggearonline.com.au we sell Hillbilly Camping Gear camp ovens because they are Australian made, Australian designed and are ideally suited for the aussie bush.
We have used Hillbilly camp ovens for years when camping with out family, as well as catering for friends in our backyard and are surprised time and time again by the results that these spun steel camp ovens produce.
They are light weight, easy to clean and need little heat to cook a roast, damper or casserole.
When buying a new camp oven there are a number of things that you should look out for
1. Weight - The weight of a camp oven effects how easy it is to cart around, as well as how big a campfire you need to make in order to cook with it. There are advantages to the older, heavy weight ovens, as well as the more modern designs like the BushKing and the BusRanger
2. Ease Of Cleaning - Old cast iron camp ovens or dutch ovens are hard to clean due to the rough surface created during the casting process. The newer spun steel surfaces are naturally non stick once they are seasoned in, and easy to wipe out. This makes the hygiene of these ovens far superior to the old designs.
3. Versatility - With new design features, there are now ovens out there that can be easily hung from a cooking stand, or have a lid that can be used as a frypan. Look closely at all of the features available before making your decision.
4. Gas Convertable ? - While you can place a cast iron pot over the heat from a gas burner, it generally takes a while to get hot, and heating from the top (a better way to cook roasts and damper, like in your convection oven at home) is impossible with the lid design of a traditional oven. A Hillbilly oven has a custom made gas attachment, allowing you to cook where a campfire is not possible.
Buy keeping the above factors in mind, you will make the right decision when buying your next oven, and be looking forward to a nice hot roast in the great outdoors before you know it !
